here are images of thye development of my tree witch you can see i have built up on from using large hard cardbrod tubes to wire then building it up from paper mache materials

tree deveopment i have been working on my paper mache tree here are some images of the tree after some thought my plans for the finaltotches have changeed i have decided instead of using family airlooms and object that have been pased down i have decided to paint nmy tree white or brown and then mark out areas by using coloured wire tape that leads of my branches and on to tghehfloor that has a certain personality traite or trait that has been passed down from my family on to the tree

Friday, 21 May 2010

deveopment of my tree so i have used papier mache to biuld up the tree after several layer i have fomed a good soild sturcure that will be either spray painted or painted several shades of brown
fort the branches i will use green crape paper that will be tightly streached and mached on top of my branches the reason i will use crape paper is because when formed on the top of the branches it emerges together and creates a bold colour when mixed in with the pva glue

Wednesday, 19 May 2010

to create the bave of my tree ihave uved large card bord tubes for the base of my tree i have then added bulk to his by creating areas that come away from the tree by taping certain areas that stand out i have then paper mached over the areas using paper newspaper and pva glue
to create the brance
s i have use dthe widest bendaable wire i could find that could create a simular shape to the tree branches
the creating part of my tree the tree that i have started to create i have first used hard cardbord tubes as the main base and trunk of my work i have then built on top of that by using paper that i have built up from this has given my tree extra bulk and created the 3d effect of my tree i ahve then built on tp of that by using papir mache with pva glue newspaper
for the branche
s i have used metal bendable wire that i have bond together i am please with the brances i think that what made the branches look quite realistic was the with of them.

the exibition has shown me that i can create every day thingsthat have a eratin meaning to them aslong as you have a good narritive behind it i can link this to my own work to
theve photo graphs were taken at the exibition at the i kon gallery the exibition contained work that looked rateher every day but when u looked closer it was images and work made from gold silver and pearl

Thursday, 29 April 2010

the second image shows a typical broom stick with mother of pearl and gold and sliver on there ei think that he whole purpose of the exhibition is that these all look like typical everyday objects but when you look closer you can see the detail and beauty of the object
these were some images taken from the ikon gallery what image shown above is the hand woven bag that by first glance looks like an average image of a typical bag but then when you look closer you can see that it is woven by hand .

Here i have taken some images from my area of some tree bark to take inspiration of what i have llooked for in particular in these images are the way the bark pattern goes and what shades of colours are in cluded with in the tree trunk what this photographs have aslso shown my is thw posssitioning and comppassition of how the tree branches sway off to form the top part of the tree

creating

i have now created a small version of my tree trunk i have used papier mache and created a minutiae version and painted it it has a rough effect going through it like a tree trunk but it does not look quite there i have now taken images of actual tree trunks and the various patterns that go though it and i will now apply this to my actual tree trunk which i am creating through a large hard cardboard tube that i will build up on

another ideas

I have also had an idea to create my tree ot of wire as this is an uturnitive idea
as this will make it more of a stylised tree and could give a whole new look to the tree

or i could use a real life tree and add on my family history ect on to that i could then calve in wat i wanted im the trunk of three this is a plus as this would be tricky to do it on the papier mache version
  • papier mache tips

  • Experiment with liquid starch (undiluted)!
  • Use wallpaper paste. Follow the directions from the manufacturer to mix this paste.
  • You can use regular white glue mixed with a bit of water. Mix using about 1 part water with 2 parts glue.
For small items, intricate details, and even some sculpting, try using one of these paper mache pulp recipes. These are more like a thin clay and should be used as a final layer simply by spreading on the pulp. These are not used as glue, but in place of it:

the sign after the idea of the tree i have also thought about creting a sign to go with it i have figered out that papier mache is best for this but not for the tree this material eill also be lighter than if i was to do it in plaster.

what is going on to my tree

the things that i have found to go on my tree is photos of my parents and there parents phots of me and my sis ters when they were young my gradparents and family air looms like jewlery and a fur coat .

tree testing material

for the actuall basis of my thrre i have decided to uve papier mache and mache over my tree base which woul dbe made up of card bord tubes and and metal wire for the branches the metal tube is ok when mached over but the card bord tube lloks quit child like and i have thought that maybe plaster would best suit this like maybe mod roc even thought this would be alot messyer i think the end result would be alot more better and professional

tracey emins work and inspirationan is frank and up front it is also auto biographical she uses certain eventshere memerable or tradic like her two abortions of hard break ups and every one she had sleept with i her life time .
tarcey emin the main thing that enspires tracey emin is that her inspiration is autobiographical and like nan goldin her work is insiperd about memerable or tragic events in her life like her teo two abortations and hard break ups

above are two main pieces of tracey emmims most famous pieces of work the first image shows he un made bed to give a insight to her and her life as the bed is used to represent her life and life style as chaotic and unpredictable the bed contains stained underwear empty alcohol bottles
the tent tracey emmin has created contains important people she has shared a bed with suchas lovers to family members and her unborn aaborted childreen .

here stefan stagmeister has used a knife and the help of his assistant to carve in tot his torso using a xacto knife and photgraphed the result
this has inspired me to use a simular tecnique in to the trunck of my family tree i will imbet nick name /phrase that have been given to me by my family nd freinds over the past years as this is a form of personal identifica.tion

ARTIsT LINK 2

My 2nd artist link is stefan stagmeister
stefan stag meister was born in 1962 in bregen Austria he has a new york based graphic design company called stagmester inc he has desined album covers for ok go ,lou reid, the rolling stones he has studied at the univercity of veinna .
how i have linked in thiv to my work what i like about nan goldin is that she has used her past and events in her life just like tracey emin nan golding has inspired me to use photo graphs in my family that show imporatnt times and certain evens that have occoured
nan golding one month after being battered 1984
this is one of nangoldins most memerable pieces of work it shows her after being batterd by her boy freind after a argument .
As you can see she has used make up to hight light her battered up face as the red lipstick indicated her blood shot eye and her bright bruises it also has been used as red indicates danger and violence that she has been shown by her boy freind . the reson i have choosen to resurch na goldings work is because she is simular to tracey emmin in t he sence that her work is autobiographical and quite frank but were as tracy emmin creates work nan golding captures this in a photograph .

artist reasruch

so far i have resurched 4 artists i have created links in to who and how i have linked in my ideas to the first link in to her becaused photographs an photographer i have decided to ue her as of inspiration because like tracey emin she uses her personal life experiances and event though out her like as inspiration and creates a visual diary thought her images this links in to mt family tree

what i need to reserch in turmes of my family resurch
visit family
collect family airlooms
track down family history
old photographs and present photograhs
any family memories

i also found this piece of work created by an artist called Ruth smucker which i realy like i also think it ties in perfectly with my work i like the way the tree is growing out of the person i kinda looks a bit gross but i like the concept of the person being the roots which is exacly what im trying to get across because of my genetics and wWHAT MADE ME? ME and WHAT MAKEs Us FAMILY ? as the person is the base and the tree branches which i could add things like memeries past photograhs and names, family air looms.ect

what next

what direction to go in
over the next week i will be creating

a3 link in sheets which clearly show my artist reasurch
Tracy emin
Lou reid
main influance Ruth smucker
Stefan sagmeister
i will be reasurching my family history and collecting family air loom
im visiting old family members
and practicing out my physicl method
papiar mache
for tree and sign
i hva also found the designer lou reid as this links in with zhang huan family tree which he has drawn on his face this has also sparked the idea of calving in to my tree facts about my family generation as this would be auto biographical.

inspiration

Graphic Designer (1962-)

STEFAN SAGMEISTER (1962-) is among today’s most important graphic designers. Born in Austria, he now lives and works in New York. His long-standing collaborators include the AIGA and musicians, David Byrne and Lou Reed.

i also want want to make a sign to go with my tree and ma family cresent or logo to represent my family genetics and family. i feel this would tie in more better than creating a poster to go with my tree.

for the branches of my tree i have decided to use things that have been passed down from my family like family airlooms and names of people in my family in an autographical sense
TRACY EMIN
I decided to link my work in to tracy emin because i like the way she notes down her past by sewing it in to things ,bed sheets tents ect .

resurch

i have been surching for various artist who have created family tree art and i have come across an artist called zhang hujan who has created a family tree on his face and took photos of this i thought this was a quite interesting idea of a family tree and it made sence as it kind of showed his ancesters history and by creating the family tree on his face it showed that he was like the end product .
i also would wat to create a sign to go with family tree this would be placed on high up near my familt tree and i am thinking about creating my own personalised family logo as this would make a clear link with graphics i can picture my final major project as like a whole area with the sign and the tree bellow.

um um DNA sTUFF

For my fmp i will be creating a bigggggggg family tree out papier meshe/pva glue and thick paper and news paper . i will also be creating the branches on the top out of tubed metal wire as this will also let me papier mashe on top of it i also would want some form of weight applied to the bottom to make sure it is well sported this something i would need to try out.
For the whole concept of the (family tree) i have been generally trying to research my family background such as my family roots and any objects ,family air looms that have been passed down
from generations i would want to use these with in my tree.

why have i chosen to do a family tree?
the theme that i have decided to focus on is genetics mainly what i wanted to look in to is what makes us family and in what way are we connected the well the obvious fact we came from the same parents or parent and we have like there dna is one thing but i want to know what truly makes us family if maybe aspects our personalitys are also involved and how we look similar and how my sister does not look like my parents but like my nan instead like she has skipped a generation.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3zki_qSrqU
i have also found a vidio which explains family genetics and meternal lines we inherite from your parents and ansestrial links and how family genetic testing through dna is carried out

Monday, 8 February 2010

concept two the second concept that i want to looking to would be genetics such as how we are linked in and what things we have inherited from or ancestors the general idea that i had was to create a large tree to represent a family tree andthen to have things hanging of the branches like represent me family history ect.
concept one
from the trip and general ideas i have thought of i have come to the conclusion that i i want to take more of a creative manual approach to my or like sculpture making the section of dna that i want to going to would be based upon either the malipulation of dna or identiy such as sex changes and obisity ect.
the images bellow are also photos taken from the dna museum this are mainly sculptures that have been created to symbolize dna these are crucial pieces of resurch because they have given me a general in site of what type of things i could be creating i now know that i want to create a sculpture because this would be my strongest point .

this is an image taken of a morbidly obese figure this image demonstrates the manual form of manipulation that can occur when you personally change your identity by looking at this image it has mainly given me the idea of what direction i would like to take with my fmp.
this is an image of a dna profiling book it would take 56 years to read the whole each letter represents individulal dna profiles

this is an image of a genome dna what i like about this modle is that it is quite raw in the sence that you can see the overall strucyure to it and the way they have buit the sculpture up using varous mixed media
FMP
our final major project has been centered around DNA to start us of we took a trip to London and visited the dna museum this gave us a general in site to the many forms of dna and the links it has to it .

Here selina , Adam have combined various letter forms found from our photos taken around the city center and created a mismatched a-z alphabet from the photographs =)
here are some development photos that we have while creating our type out of nuts and bolts
we have then built it up by u
sing a glue gun to stick it together

Tuesday, 12 January 2010

we have chosen the industrialized concept the approach we will be taking to this will be creating a type using nails, nuts and bolts.
so far we have come up with a brainstorm and two ideas economy and industry the reason we have picked out these i ideas is because they link in with Birmingham because it was one of the most industrialized and economized city at one point
We have been asked to crate a blog on the everyday typography that is placed around our community in the city center we was asked to take photographs of type around town
here are a few photographs bellow of some of the images of everyday type that i have captured they range from signs to graffiti and road markings this will also be used as inspiration to help form our ideas from.
